NRS E-Invoicing: What Every Nigerian Business Must Do Before Its Deadline

Mandatory e-invoicing is reaching Nigerian businesses by turnover band, from large taxpayers already enforced to smaller firms in 2027. When it applies to you, and what to do now.

Nigeria is moving every business that issues invoices onto electronic invoicing run by the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), the body that was the Federal Inland Revenue Service until 1 January 2026. Under the new system, invoices are transmitted to the NRS platform, called the Merchant-Buyer Solution (MBS), and each carries an Invoice Reference Number.

Large taxpayers went first and are already enforced. Medium taxpayers went live in July 2026. Smaller businesses follow in 2027. Whatever your size, the businesses that find the switch painless are the ones whose invoices already come from structured systems rather than Word and Excel.

When does e-invoicing apply to my business?

The NRS is phasing the mandate in by annual turnover:

    • Large taxpayers, above ₦5 billion a year: went live in November 2025, with enforcement from April 2026.
    • Medium taxpayers, ₦1 billion to ₦5 billion a year: went live on 1 July 2026, with enforcement from January 2027.
    • Emerging taxpayers, below ₦1 billion a year: go live on 1 July 2027, with enforcement from January 2028.

If you are a large or medium taxpayer, the question is no longer when but whether every invoicing point in the business, including branches and subsidiaries, is covered. If you are in the emerging group, 2027 is only a few VAT cycles away once you account for choosing software, cleaning up customer records and training staff. Our NRS e-invoicing guide keeps these dates up to date.

What the NRS expects from a business in scope

    • Onboard on the NRS Merchant-Buyer Solution.
    • Connect your invoicing system through an approved Access Point Provider or Systems Integrator.
    • Complete the validation and testing requirements.
    • Transmit your invoices to the NRS platform.
    • Accept only compliant e-invoices, with valid Invoice Reference Numbers, from your own suppliers.

The last point catches people out. E-invoicing is not only about the invoices you send. Once your phase is live, the bills you receive from suppliers also need to be compliant, so your purchasing side has to be organised too.

Five things to do this quarter

    • Stop issuing invoices from templates. A Word or Excel invoice cannot be transmitted to the NRS. Move to software that records every invoice as structured data: customer, line items, VAT and payment status.
    • Clean up your customer list. Every regular customer should have a correct legal name, address and Tax Identification Number (TIN) on file.
    • Get your own TIN and VAT details right on every invoice, and show VAT separately from the price.
    • Put supplier bills in one place. Bills scattered across WhatsApp and personal inboxes are hard to check for compliance and easy to lose.
    • Agree with your finance team or accountant which approved provider you will transmit through, and for larger groups, who owns e-invoicing in each entity and branch.

    How Billif helps

Billif invoicing records every invoice as structured data, calculates VAT as you raise it, and keeps a VAT report ready to file. Supplier bills forwarded to your Billif mailbox are read automatically and filed as payables. Billif is working towards accreditation as an NRS e-invoicing service provider. Until that is complete, a business already in scope still transmits its invoices through an approved Access Point Provider, and Billif keeps those invoices clean and ready.

    Frequently asked questions

Do small businesses in Nigeria need e-invoicing?
Yes, eventually. Businesses with turnover below ₦1 billion are in the emerging taxpayer group, which goes live on 1 July 2027 with enforcement from January 2028.
Is the NRS the same as FIRS?
Yes. The Federal Inland Revenue Service became the Nigeria Revenue Service under the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act 2025, effective 1 January 2026.
Can I keep using Excel invoices until my phase starts?
You can, but it makes the switch harder. Moving to invoicing software early means your customer records, VAT treatment and invoice history are already structured when your phase begins.
